Januzaj Flourishes In Best Position

Adnan Januzaj has struggled to make an impact under Louis van Gaal at Manchester United this season, but against Burnley he showed promising signs.

For the first time in the Premier League this season, the Belgian was started in a central attacking midfield role behind the striker, a position usually occupied by Juan Mata or Wayne Rooney.

He was incredibly unlucky not to score his first goal of the season, seeing a late effort cleared off the line by Burnley defender Jason Shackell.

Januzaj registered both of his two shots on target, and it was the first time in any game in which he has started in the league this season he has even hit the target at all.

While he did not create any goalscoring chances, as opposed to three each against Crystal Palace and Chelsea, Januzaj completed six successful dribbles, more than in any game he has played for the club this season.

In his central role he looked to have greater freedom, and play with the confidence he has not always done so with at times this season.

Competition for places will always make Januzaj’s aim to hold down a first team spot tougher, and he could have done with scoring late on to help his cause, but it would have been difficult for Louis van Gaal and Ryan Giggs not to note the quality of his performance, which can only stand him in good stead going forward.
