OUTGOING CJN, ALOMA MUKHTAR (L) AND Justice MAHMUD MOHAMMED
His nomination was sent by the president to the Senate and was read during plenary on Wednesday.
If confirmed, Mr. Mohammed, who is the next most senior Supreme Court judge after Aloma Mukhtar, will take oath of office as Nigeria’s Chief Justice.
The present CJN, Mrs. Muhtar, is due for retirement on November 20 after clocking the mandatory age of 70.
Mr. Jonathan’s letter read: “In conformity with section 231 sub section (1) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, which gives the President powers to appoint a Chief Justice of Nigeria, acting on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council and subject to confirmation of the appointment by the Senate, I have the honour to forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Mahmud Mohammed, CFR for confirmation as Chief Justice of Nigeria”.
The date for the screening and confirmation of Justice Mahmud Muhammed has not been fixed.
