The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) has enrolled inmates at the Goron Dutse Custodial Center into the state’s Basic Healthcare Scheme, following approval from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Public Relations Officer of KSCHMA, Aminu Ahmad Turaki.
Speaking during a briefing, the agency’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, revealed that 108 inmates were screened for tuberculosis (TB), with seven testing positive for the disease.

Additionally, 21 inmates were identified as having symptoms suggestive of TB.
“We are committed to ensuring the health and wellbeing of all residents of Kano State, including those in custodial centers.
The healthcare needs of inmates are crucial to effective custodial management and their successful rehabilitation and reintegration into society,” Dr. Rahila stated.
The health screening also uncovered other medical conditions among the inmates. According to Dr. Rahila, 162 inmates were diagnosed with skin infections such as eczema, scabies, dermatitis, and impetigo.
Furthermore, five inmates were found to have hypertension, three with diabetes, and one with osteoporosis.
Dr. Rahila confirmed that all affected inmates are currently receiving treatment and medication at the Goron Dutse Custodial Center, supported by the state government through KSCHMA.
“This initiative aligns with the Governor’s vision of achieving Universal Health Coverage for all residents of Kano State.
The health and medical welfare of inmates is essential for efficient custodial management as well as effective reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration,” she concluded.
The move underscores the government’s commitment to improving healthcare access and ensuring no segment of society is left behind.
