Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has warned that his administration will not tolerate filth and dirt in public places even as he cautioned traders in particular to ensure that they keep markets and their places of business clean.
The Governor paid an unscheduled visit to the Ogbegonogo market, Asaba and frowned at the situation where traders do their business in untidy environment, and noted that such was not healthy for the consumers of their products.
He emphasized that his administration has mapped out programmes which are on-going in different parts of the State to ensure that the State remained one of the neatest in the country, reiterating that markets in particular should be tidy to avoid the spread of diseases as consumable goods were sold in such places.
The Governor warned the traders to learn to keep their environment clean because the State Task Force on Clean Environment will be in Asaba to enforce cleanliness and anybody caught defacing the environment will be tried by the mobile court, adding that government will enforce it to positively change people’s perception on keeping clean environment.
He observed that the taskforce on the removal of illegal structure is still carrying on its mandate to ensure that street trading becomes a thing of the past and stressed that apart from the markets being clean, the streets and public places must be kept clean at all times.
According to him, cleanliness is next to godliness and Deltans are godly people and as such, everybody residing in the State must imbibe the right attitude towards the environment.
He also frowned at the traffic congestion being witnessed at the Ogbeogonogo market as a result of the activities of tricycle operators (popularly called Keke riders) and directed the Ministry of Environment to ensure that they are relocated.
