The Lagos State Police Command has taken custody of Adeleye Ayomide, a 23-year-old accused of murdering Idowu Christiana, a 300-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Ayomide was handed over to the police by the Nigerian Army’s 9 Brigade Headquarters in Lagos on Thursday, 5th September 2024, marking a significant step forward in the investigation of the tragic incident.
The transfer of the suspect was confirmed by the Lagos State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who made the announcement via his official X (formerly Twitter) account. “23-year-old Ayomide Adeleye has been handed over to #LagosPoliceNG by 9 Brigade #HQNigerianArmy.

The handover took place today, September 5, 2024, at about 1400hrs. Investigation is ongoing,” Hundeyin stated, underscoring the commitment of the police to thoroughly investigate the case and bring those responsible to justice.
The tragic events leading to Ayomide’s arrest began on Monday, 19th August 2024, when Christiana was abducted along the Ikorodu-Yaba Road in Lagos State.
The young student, full of promise and with a bright future ahead, became the latest victim of a kidnapping epidemic that has plagued various parts of Nigeria, leaving families and communities in fear.
According to reports, Christiana’s abductors initially demanded a ransom of N3 million for her safe release.
However, after intense negotiations and desperate pleas from her family, the kidnappers agreed to lower the ransom to N350,000. Despite receiving the reduced sum, the abductors failed to release Christiana, a move that tragically culminated in her death.
The circumstances surrounding her killing are still under investigation, but the involvement of Ayomide Adeleye in the case has brought some hope of resolution to the grieving family.
The case has drawn widespread attention and sparked outrage, with many calling for stricter measures to curb the growing wave of kidnappings and violent crime in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria.
As the investigation unfolds, the Lagos State Police Command has assured the public that every effort is being made to uncover the full extent of the crime, including identifying any accomplices who may have been involved in the kidnapping and subsequent murder of the student.
The handover of Adeleye by the Nigerian Army has also highlighted the importance of inter-agency cooperation in tackling crime in Nigeria.
The swift action by the Army in apprehending and transferring the suspect to the police demonstrates a unified approach to law enforcement, which is crucial in addressing the complex challenges posed by organised crime and insecurity in the country.
The Lagos State Police Command has urged anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to come forward.
The command reiterated its commitment to protecting witnesses and ensuring that justice is served, not only for Christiana and her family but for all victims of similar crimes.
The case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers that students and young people face, particularly in urban areas where kidnappings have become disturbingly frequent.
Community leaders and concerned citizens have also voiced their concerns over the rising incidents of abduction, calling on the government to implement more effective security measures and provide better support for law enforcement agencies.
The tragic death of Christiana has reignited debates about the safety of students in Nigeria, with many advocating for increased security presence on campuses and safer transportation options for students travelling between home and school.
As the investigation into Christiana’s death continues, the Lagos State Police Command has promised regular updates to keep the public informed of any progress made.
The arrest of Adeleye is seen as a positive step, but there is still much work to be done to bring all those involved to justice and prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
In the wake of this incident, the Lagos State Police Command has renewed its appeal to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
The command has also encouraged citizens to support the police in their efforts to create a safer environment for everyone.
While Christiana’s death has brought sorrow to her family and community, it has also strengthened the resolve of law enforcement to combat crime and protect the lives of innocent Nigerians.
The case of Idowu Christiana stands as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against violent crime in Nigeria.
As the police continue their investigation, the hope remains that justice will be served, and that her death will not be in vain but will spur greater efforts to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
