The Lagos State Government has revealed its intention to launch a massive crackdown on illegal buildings in 2024.
Dr Oluyinka Olumide, the Commissioner for Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, made this announcement in a recent statement released by Abimbola Emdin-Umehin, the Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPA).
Dr Olumide emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards illegality in building construction within the state.

He expressed dismay at the discovery of unauthorized additional floors in a building under construction at Isaac John Street by Oba Dosunmu Street, GRA Ikeja.
The developer had initially been granted permission for a 6-floor mixed-use construction by the authority but allegedly proceeded to add two extra floors without authorization.
To rectify this violation, Dr Olumide stated that the developer must comply with all conditions attached to the property’s permit or remove the unauthorized floors before the building can be unsealed.
He affirmed the government’s commitment to collaborating with relevant agencies to identify and penalize offenders, reiterating that the government will not tolerate any infractions of building laws.
As the new year begins, the Lagos State Government is determined to crack down on unlawful development activities and ensure strict adherence to physical planning permit laws.
Dr Olumide stressed the importance of upholding order and creating a safe and organized environment for all residents of Lagos.
The government’s proactive stance aims to maintain the structural integrity of buildings and enhance overall urban development in the state.
