The Lagos State Government has taken a significant step in environmental conservation by prohibiting the use and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics within the state.
This directive was conveyed in a statement released on Sunday by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner of Environment and Works.
Wahab emphasized that the decision was prompted by the adverse impact of single-use plastics, particularly non-biodegradable Styrofoam, on the environment.
The menace caused by these materials necessitated the government’s action to curb their usage and distribution.
This move aligns with the concerns raised by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) in 2022 regarding the escalating usage of single-use plastics, pet bottles, polystyrene, and other non-biodegradable wastes across the state.
LASEPA had stressed the need for viable and reusable alternatives to mitigate pollution and address waste management challenges in the state.
The ban on Styrofoam and single-use plastics reflects the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable environmental practices and ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for Lagosians.
