Only two Nigerians will partake in the knockout round of this season’s Uefa Champions League with their respective clubs after Wednesday final round of games were decided in the group stages of the competition.
Ahmed Musa fell short with CSKA Moscow and Theinfostride.com now runs the rule on the prospects of Nigerians still standing in the most glamourous club competition in the world.
Moses Simon (KAA Gent)
Simon was the provider of Gent’s first goal in the 2-1 win over previously undefeated Zenit St Petersburg at GHELAMCO Arena on Wednesday.
The Super Eagles man has been in fine fettle in recent weeks and made three appearances for Gent in the group stages.
He will hope to continue his fine run in the competition having helped Gent qualify for the round of 16 as second-placed finishers in Group H with 10 points from six matches.
John Mikel Obi (Chelsea)
Mikel has hardly played for Chelsea this season with the club’s manager, Jose Mourinho clearly favouring Serbian midfielder, Nemanja Matic in the holding role.
Chelsea won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge against Porto on Wednesday night to seal top spot in Group G with points from six matches.
Mikel replaced Diego Costa on 86 minutes as the Blues shook aside their poor domestic form to reach the knockout round.
The Nigerian who has played just 66 minutes in Chelsea UCL campaign this season will hope for better luck when the knockout round come around.
