The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has paid glowing tribute to the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, describing him as a passionate advocate for nation-building and ethical rebirth.
In a statement personally signed by him, Umahi said Iwuanyanwu’s life was dedicated to advancing a peaceful, prosperous, united, and just Nigeria.
He urged the family of the deceased and the people of the South-East to uphold the ideals the late statesman stood for.
“I am here today with a deep sense of loss, yet with a gratifying heart for the purposeful life and times of my leader, father, and professional colleague, Chief Engr. Emmanuel Chuwuemeka Iwuanyanwu, CFR, who was called to eternal glory on July 25, 2024, at the age of 82,” Umahi stated.
Reflecting on Iwuanyanwu’s legacy, the minister described him as a national figure known for his impeccable political, professional, and business achievements.
“Chief Iwuanyanwu championed the cause of national renaissance with unwavering passion, advocating for equity, value reorientation, and national development,” he added.
Umahi highlighted the significant impact Iwuanyanwu had in various sectors, including media, hospitality, shipping, insurance, and aviation.
“His legacy continues through his business ventures, notably Champion Newspaper Ltd, now led by his daughter, Dr. (Mrs.) Nwadiuto Iheakanwa,” he noted.
The late statesman was also celebrated for his political influence. “A heavyweight in Nigeria’s political arena, Iwuanyanwu played key roles in national reconciliation and election harmonization during the 3rd and 4th Republics, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political landscape,” Umahi remarked.
Iwuanyanwu’s leadership at Ohanaeze Ndigbo was also praised. “When a leadership vacuum emerged following the death of Ambassador Obiozor, Chief Iwuanyanwu stepped in and achieved remarkable progress within a short time,” the minister said.
“He fought for a just and egalitarian nation until his last breath. Nigeria has lost a gem who came, saw, and conquered,” Umahi declared, urging the South-East community to honor Iwuanyanwu’s legacy by fostering the values he represented.
“Though he has left an irreplaceable vacuum, his ideals must live on. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen,” Umahi concluded.
