Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo has appealed to delegates at the National Conference to make recommendations that will lead to legislation for sufficient and sustainable power supply.
The Minister made this call while making a presentation to the Energy Committee of the ongoing National Conference in Abuja. He also called for the understanding and cooperation of all Nigerians, for the full actualization of the reform of Nigeria’s power sector. Prof. Nebo explained that the privatization exercise was necessitated by the huge volume of funding required for the sector, and the need to speed up efforts for power supply to meet up with per capita supply that is comparable to other nations of the world.
He stated that local and foreign investors are eager to participate in the industry because they know that Nigeria is in a leading position in terms of return on investment index.
On power generation status, currently hovering around 4,000MW status, the Minister assured that with on-going rehabilitation works on Kainji and Jebba power plants, more power will be made available to homes and businesses in the country, from the two facilities, before the end of the year.
The two plants which have not undergone maintenance for decades are now being serviced for optimum performance.
Answering questions from the Committee members,. Minister of State for Power Hon. Mohammed Wakil reiterated the call for the Conference to come up with recommendations that will address the nagging issue of facility vandalism.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Amb. Dr. Godknows Igali has also called on Nigerians to assess the sincerity of the Goodluck Jonathan administration by the level of promises kept. He explained that virtually all aspects of the Power Sector Roadmap have been achieved.
While speaking earlier, the Chairman of the National Conference Committee on Energy, Senator Rasheed Ladoja described the power sector as a critical one in view of its linkage to virtually all aspects of national life.
