NGO Alleges Corporate Bodies, FBOs Are Not Doing Enough To Assist IDPs

Internally-Displaced-Persons-IDP-CampA non-governmental organisation, Campaign for Democracy (CD), yesterday observed that corporate bodies and faith-based organizations were not doing enough to assist Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nigeria.

Speaking with newsmen in Enugu, the South-East Chairman of the organisation, Comrade Uzor Uzor, said that the IDP camps scattered in most states, were in dire need of welfare facilities.

According to him, it is not enough to just “pray” for the IDPs and “wish them well”, but that efforts must be made to touch their lives in practical terms, to give them a sense of belonging to the society.

“The government cannot do it all alone as the resources are limited. Nigerians can rally round these our brothers and sisters by bringing succour to them, especially providing medicare, clothing and food. From the assessment of CD, corporate bodies and faith-based organizations are not doing enough, even with their numerous gains and good financial standing. Organisations exempted from paying tax should return the goodwill given to them by the government, through catering for our displaced brothers and sisters,” he said.

Uzor also called on Nigerians to be security conscious by putting in place, an all-embracing security arrangement.

“The days when one does not care about what happens in his or her neighbourhood is over; everybody, even children, should be educated to be security alert,” he advised. [CD/AN]
