The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have announced plans to enhance their partnership to curb illegal migration through the Lagos State waterways.
The decision to deepen their collaboration was reached during a meeting between the new Comptroller of Immigration in charge of Lagos Seaports and Marine Command, CIS Joseph Dada, and the NIWA Lagos Area Manager, Mrs. Sarat Braimah, in Lagos.
CIS Dada highlighted the importance of strategic cooperation with NIWA to improve NIS operations on the waterways.

He emphasized the need for individuals to migrate legally, obtain proper travel documents such as passports and visas, and use authorized channels for travel.
He also expressed concern about Nigerian women falling victim to human trafficking for prostitution under the guise of job offers abroad.
In response, Mrs. Braimah welcomed the idea of collaboration, emphasizing that both agencies are working towards the common goal of ensuring the well-being of Nigerians and the country as a whole.
She expressed readiness to support NIS in preventing illegal migration, noting that NIWA could provide training for immigration officials on safe boarding of vessels and supply boats, life jackets, and other equipment upon request from NIS.
