ABUJA (NEMA Report) – The Nigerian Government is set to host the 5th African Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in Abuja at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel from May 13 – 16, 2014. A release from the Public Relations Department of the National Emergency Management Agency on Monday May 5, 2014 has indicated that Ministers and government officials across Africa will discuss and adopt a draft declaration based on a compilation of recommendations arising from the three-day stakeholder deliberation and dialogue. The event, it said will be staged in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Digsaster Risk Reduction’s Regional Office for Africa (UNISDR), the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). It is purposed to identify key priorities and commitments for Africa’s position on the ‘Post-Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) 2015’ and to develop a future action-plan on building the resilience of African communities in line with sustainable development goals. “About 500 – 600 participants are expected to attend the conference from African countries, inter-governmental regional organizations, bilateral and multilateral donors, the United Nations, academic and technical institutions, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, Non-Governmental Organisations, Local Governments, community leaders, Parliamentarians, youths, the media and the private sector,” the report stated. According to the report, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim is scheduled to declare the forum open; whilst the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency will be the chief host. It further observed that Nigeria is one of the 168 countries which adopted the resolution for the implementation of the ten-year International Disaster Risk Strategy known as the ‘Hyogo Framework for Action’ (HFA 2010-2015) at the World Conference on Disaster Reduction held in Hyogo, Japan in 2005.
