The Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Ibaka, Akwa Ibom State, has apprehended three suspected oil thieves transporting a boat loaded with crude oil valued at N32 million.
Captain Uche Aneke, Commanding Officer of FOB Ibaka, disclosed the arrest while handing over the suspects and seized items to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Akwa Ibom Command on Thursday in Ibaka.
Aneke explained that the suspects were arrested on Tuesday at approximately 9:05 a.m. following intelligence reports on suspected crude oil theft activities within the Navy’s operational area.
“With the necessary support of FOB Ibaka, the Tantita team intercepted and arrested the suspects in possession of a wooden boat carrying about 60,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil,” Aneke said.
Recovered items included outboard engines and a pumping machine.
Aneke noted that the boat, manned by three crew members—all Nigerians—was equipped with 11 Geepee tanks filled with approximately 60,000 litres of crude oil, allegedly sourced offshore from Ibeno, Akwa Ibom.
Captain Aneke issued a stern warning to individuals or groups involved in criminal activities within Nigerian waters, urging them to desist.
He reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to combating maritime crime in the region under the leadership of Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.
