The Nigerian Senate has announced a special plenary session scheduled for Saturday, December 30, 2023, to deliberate on and pass the 2024 Appropriation Bill.
This decision comes in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s earlier presentation of the N27.5 trillion budget proposal to the National Assembly in November, with a call for swift approval before the year-end.
The proposed budget outlines a targeted revenue of N18.324 trillion, with a deficit of N9.18 trillion to be covered through a combination of internal and external borrowings, as well as proceeds from privatisation.
Previously, the Senate had planned to reconvene on Friday, December 29, 2023, to expedite the budget’s passage.
However, the clerk of the Senate, Chinedu Francis Akubueze, announced a rescheduled plenary for Saturday, December 30, 2023, at 10 am.
This decision is consistent with the House of Representatives’ stance, as both chambers are now set to deliberate on and pass the budget on the same date.
President Tinubu has named the budget “Budget of Renewed Hope,” highlighting its focus on achieving macroeconomic stability, poverty reduction, and enhanced access to social security, among other key objectives.
