Prof. Julius Okojie, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), has described the poor reading habits cultivated by Nigerians as something embarrassing.

Okojie made the remark on Wednesday in Abuja at the presentation of a book entitled: “The Jonathan/ Sambo Presidency in Nigeria; A symbol of Peace, Unity and Progress to Nigerian universities“.

He said the NUC would proceed in building people by encouraging publications and superb reading habits in the university community.

Okojie, however commended the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration for consolidating on the gains of democracy that started since 1999.

“Democracy is waxing stronger; the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan has been building on the past gains since 1999.
.
“We are making progress in this country; we can only hope for the best,” he said.

Okojie said government had been taking bold steps to ensure progress everywhere.

He added that it was imperative for Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunities to improve themselves, especially in the area of education.

He said the book, which the commission considered relevant to university education and worthy of introduction to the public, would be circulated to universities in the country.

Speaking earlier, the author of the book, Dr Funmi Adesanya-Davies, said the concept behind writing the book was to depict the administration of Jonathan/Sambo administration as being a symbol of peace, unity and progress.

Adesanya-Davies said the book was highly recommended because “it is not only political, but also historical’’.

She said the book, which was launched in April 2012, would be distributed to all levels of education starting with the university.
