The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has pledged to continue its nationwide campaign for a comprehensive review of the national minimum wage.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made the declaration during an event organised by pensioners in Abuja.
According to him, the welfare of workers cannot be discussed in isolation from the welfare of pensioners who have completed their active years of service.
Ajaero urged workers and pensioners across the country to prepare for what he described as the ideological and economic struggles ahead.
“The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) is one of the proud affiliates of the Nigeria Labour Congress. Therefore, your struggle is our struggle, and your welfare remains a priority for the organised labour movement,” he said.
He disclosed that the labour movement was already preparing for a major national campaign aimed at securing a comprehensive review of the national minimum wage.
“We are currently in the preparatory stages for a major national struggle for a comprehensive review of the national minimum wage,” Ajaero stated.
The NLC president stressed that pensioners must be included in any conversation about workers’ welfare.
“However, let me state unequivocally that it is no longer acceptable to discuss the welfare of workers without also discussing the welfare of those who have completed their active years of service,” he added.
