No Going Back On Dissolution Of Plateau LG Councils – Gov. Lalong

Governor Simon Bako Lalong of Plateau State yesterday said that there was no going back on the recent dissolution of local government councils in the state.
He attributed the dissolution of the councils to alleged corruption cases.
Lalong had on July 5, 2015 dissolved the 17 local government councils and directed all the council chairmen, members of the executive arm, councilors and other political appointees to hand over government property in their possession to the Directors of Personnel Management (DPMs).
However, 14 council chairmen, with the exception of Wase and Jos North, where elections did not take place and Langtang North, where the chairman recently decamped to the All Progressives Congress (APC), had accused the state government of disobeying a valid court injunction preventing their removal from office.
The ousted chairmen had last week obtained a court order directing the state government to allow them access to their offices, which have been sealed by security agents on the orders of the governor.
However, Lalong, while addressing a delegation of Muslim ummah who paid him Sallah homage at the Government House on Monday, said the dissolution of the councils was a popular view of the people.
According to him, the need to eradicate corruption at the local government level was part of his reasons for the dissolution, stressing that “we are going to have zero tolerance to corruption. That is why we want to ensure that we start on a very clean level at the local government. And that is part of the reasons for the dissolution”.
“Our local government councils cannot continue to seat down when we have cases of monumental corruption. We have set up a committee. If anyone doubts it, we will reveal it to the committee”, he said.
The governor further stated that necessary strategies would be mapped out to tackle corruption at the local government, stressing that “it will no longer be business as usual”.
“Even though I don’t want to go too far on the issue of dissolution because some people say they have gone to court. But the government has taken its decision. We are not going back on that decision”, the governor insisted.
