The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that there are no “untouchables” in Abuja, emphasizing that all residents, regardless of status or wealth, must comply with the law.
Wike made the assertion on Thursday while delivering the 2025 Distinguished Personality Lecture at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. His lecture was titled “Nigeria of Our Dreams.”
The former Rivers State governor said his administration has, since assuming office nearly two years ago, prioritized strict enforcement of rules and regulations in line with constitutional provisions.

“Poor people don’t own houses in the FCT. All the affluent areas — Maitama, Asokoro, and the Central Business District — are occupied by the rich. Some of them believe they are untouchable. But a good leader must be ready to step on toes, and that is exactly what we have done,” Wike stated.
He noted that leadership is not about popularity or sentiment, but about making bold decisions for the greater good.
“Leadership is not a popularity contest; it’s about courage and the ability to make tough decisions. President Bola Tinubu is one such leader—bold and decisive,” he added.
Wike further criticized wealthy individuals in Abuja who, he alleged, seek to evade taxes despite owning luxury properties in highbrow districts.
“I’m not the first FCT Minister, but I’ve made it clear that no one is exempt. Mention one poor person who owns property in Maitama—none. They are all wealthy individuals who don’t want to pay taxes. Well, they must pay. If they don’t, I will touch them, and heaven will not fall — in fact, it will be at peace,” he declared.
Reaffirming his commitment to enforcing accountability, Wike said he was appointed not to engage in a “beauty contest,” but to ensure effective governance and restore Abuja to its rightful status as the nation’s capital.
He concluded by emphasizing that the Nigeria of everyone’s dreams must be built on fairness, justice, and courageous leadership.
