On Friday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed pessimism about the prospects for a quick resolution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
At a press conference here before the G20 summit, Guterres stated that it appears the two countries are not close to resolving their dispute.
To the question of whether India could play a mediating role in ending the crisis, he responded, “When you have a conflict, all efforts of mediation are welcome…. (But) I am not very hopeful that we will have a peace solution in the immediate future.”

Guterres, when discussing the need for reforms to multilateral institutions, pointed out that many of today’s countries did not even exist when these multinational institutions were established.
In his words, “the UNSC and many others” share this view.
When asked if India should join the United Nations Security Council, Guterres replied, “It is not for me to decide who would be in the UNSC, it is for the members (to decide).”
However, it cannot be denied that India is currently the world’s most populous nation and an indispensable member of the international community.
The only thing I can add is that I agree with the call for adjustments to the multilateral system so that it better reflects the modern reality.
Guterres, when asked if there should be a timeframe for reforms to the multilateral organizations, stated, “There is a need to do it, but I am not sure if we get it. However, I consider this a pressing matter.
