In a move to reduce the harmful effects of vehicle emissions on human health and the environment, the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) has finalized plans to commence vehicle emission control across the state.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on OGEPA, Farouk Akintunde, disclosed this on Monday during a stakeholders’ meeting with the transportation sector in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
According to Akintunde, the emission test will begin on March 1, 2025, with designated centers set up across the state for testing all types of vehicles, including cars, trucks, motorbikes, buses, and tricycles.

“This meeting is to inform you and seek your cooperation for the success of the scheme, as all necessary preparations are in place for its commencement,” he stated.
The Commandant of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Commander Seni Ogunyemi, urged transportation unions to embrace the initiative, emphasizing its benefits for public health and safety.
Similarly, the Ogun State Commander of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), Ademehin Olugboyega, noted that vehicles that fail the emission test would be referred to the VIO for further inspection.
Speaking on behalf of transportation unions, the Secretary of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Tiwalade Akingbade, pledged full support for the initiative.
He also appealed to the state government to assist transporters in converting their vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to align with the new policy.
