As part of measures to encourage the use of crash helmets among commercial motorcyclists in Ogun State, the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) in conjunction with Non Governmental Organisation, “Arrive Alive”, has given out 250 free crash helmets to some of them.
Addressing the riders at a seminar during which the helmets were distributed, TRACE boss, Ayo Sangofadeji enjoined them to continue obeying traffic laws and regulations, give consideration to other road users and make patience their watchword as the year is gradually running to an end
Sangofadeji maintained that observing all these rules and principles would help reduce road traffic crashes during the festive period and beyond, noting that commercial motorcycle riding had become an acceptable form of transportation.
He tasked them to be safety conscious always, emphasising that on its part, his agency would continually embark on sensitization programmes in line with current trends in road management.
“Because of the prevailing economic conditions in our society, more and more people are taking to commercial motorcycle riding and it has gradually become our way of transportation, nonetheless, you need to be safety conscious at all times and this is why on our part, we will not relent in organizing programmes like this to instill in you the safety culture” Sangofadeji noted.
He reminded them of the need to always wear the crash helmet as it would protect them in cases of accident; warning that anyone caught not wearing it would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Speaking in the same vein, Executive Secretary of “Arrive Alive”, Mr. Ike Okonkwo said helmet usage was not only important to fulfill the law, but also necessary for safety of riders. He decried the use of factory caps by riders, saying the practice was not acceptable and could not protect the head in case of accident.
On his part, the General Manager, Parks and Garages Development Board (PAGADEB), Alhaji Ayo Ogunsolu enjoined all commercial motorcycle riders to use the lay-by and parks provided when picking passengers, noting that indiscriminate stoppage on the road could cause accidents.
