As the country is set to join the rest of the world in eliminating malaria, Ogun State government has assured that it is putting all hands on deck to ensure that it is not lagging behind to achieve the new policy.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka made this declaration in Ota at a 5-day workshop on the development 2014 Annual Operational Plan (AOP) for malaria control organised by the State government in collaboration with Support for National Malaria Programme (SuNMaP).
Dr. Soyinka submitted that the State which had been working in line with the National Malaria Control Programme was now developing its 2014 AOP to ensure malaria elimination, saying that participants were drawn from Ministries, Departments Agencies and civil societies to develop a reliable working document.
Represented by the Director, Public Health, Dr. Qudus Yusuf, Soyinka stated that the essence of the AOP is to fine tune ways to eliminate malaria burden in the State and proffer ways to achieve this.
He said before now, the State had been embarking on various steps such as distribution of insecticide treated nets, sensitization and enlightenment of the public towards controlling and reducing malaria in the State.
Also speaking, the Programme Consultant, Dr. Duro Dolapo, pointed out that the 2014 AOP was the third edition that would be developed for the State, noting that SuNMaP had been supporting the State to develop the AOP since 2011.
He stated the 2014 AOP will span through 2020 and that it would focus on malaria elimination rather than control, emphasizing that activities contained in the plan would be effectively executed to ensure this.
