A prominent figure within the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, an apex Igbo sociocultural organization, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, has called on South-East leaders to seek the support of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in advocating for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a statement issued on Sunday, Isiguzoro urged for a coordinated engagement with influential figures, including traditional leaders such as the Oba of Lagos and the Sultan of Sokoto, to facilitate the resolution of Kanu’s case.
The statement reads in part: “In this challenging landscape, we must adopt a multifaceted strategy to advocate for Kanu’s immediate release.
Mobilizing International Influence: We must urgently seek to engage former President Donald Trump, appealing for him to apply pressure on Britain’s Prime Minister and President Tinubu, as Kanu was once a vocal supporter of Trump.
This relationship can serve as a powerful diplomatic tool in our quest for justice.”
Isiguzoro further emphasized the role of traditional authorities: “Engaging Traditional Leadership: We propose immediate outreach to the Oba of Lagos and the Sultan of Sokoto.
Their influential positions allow them to act as mediators who can help facilitate constructive dialogues necessary for resolving this matter.”
He also called for a “tactical ceasefire” among agitation groups in the Southeast, advocating for a peaceful atmosphere conducive to negotiation:
“An environment of calm will enhance the potential for meaningful discussions surrounding Nnamdi Kanu’s release.”
Isiguzoro criticized the perceived inaction of Southeast governors, describing it as “an unforgivable disregard for Nnamdi Kanu and his supporters.”
He further questioned the commitment of some Igbo traditional rulers and clerics, who he claims have been reluctant to support Kanu in critical moments.
