Hundreds of jubilant supporters of the re-elected Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, took to the streets of Owerri, the state capital on Sunday to celebrate his victory.
Mr. Okorocha was declared winner of Saturday’s supplementary election by the Returning Officer, Prof. Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, bringing to an end apprehension over his re-election.
The supporters rode on the rooftops of cars and buses waving brooms and the flags of the All Progressives Congress, APC, screaming the governor’s favourite slogan “My people my people, my governor my governor”.
They trooped into major roads and streets in the town causing traffic build up on Bank Road and Douglas Road towards the Government House.
The jubilating supporters dancing to loud music had trooped to the streets as early as 6 a.m., few hours after the results were announced.
They later converged on the Government House chapel where Gov. Okorocha was having a thanksgiving service to congratulate him.
The elated governor dedicated his victory to the masses of the state who he described as the main victors of the election.
“I have asked God to bless me so that I can bless others. I asked him to honour me so that I can honour others; give me leadership position so that I can impact on my people. This victory is for them”, he said.
“I have redeemed my campaign promises – now my people can enjoy free education, kidnapping is now a thing of the past, now it is time for job, industry, employment and the first beneficiaries would be my twenty five thousand youths waiting for employment, one thousand others will go to turkey for industrial training”, Mr. Okorocha added.
He, therefore, extended a hand of fellowship to his opponents, calling on them to partner with him and build a viable state all residents will be proud of.
“I suffered a lot of campaign of calumny and hate speeches from my opponents but one thing they would never say is that I did not work. Now I am the governor of APC, APGA and PDP, so I call on them to join”, he said.
