A Former Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign council, Doyin Okupe, has announced that he will no longer support the former Anambra State governor.
Okupe, who recently faced backlash for endorsing President Bola Tinubu’s economic recovery plan, described his critics as “ignorant” in comments made on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday.
Reflecting on his previous support for Obi during the 2023 election cycle, Okupe explained his shift in stance.
“I cannot support Peter Obi again,” he said. “The reason is that we agreed a Southern President must emerge.”
Okupe recounted a conversation with Afenifere leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo, where they agreed the South-East should produce Nigeria’s next leader.
“All eminent Yoruba people supported you, yet now you publicly criticize us. It’s wrong,” Okupe remarked.
Okupe’s statements mark a significant rift between him and Obi, whom he once championed as a candidate for national leadership.
