Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the release of over ₦50 million for the payment of outstanding benefits owed to 265 deceased state workers who died within the past 16 years.
The approved funds will be disbursed to the verified next-of-kin of the affected workers.
Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Otti.

Kanu said the move reflects the present administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, distinguishing it from previous governments that neglected such obligations.
“The payment will be made to their verified next-of-kin,” he stated.
The Commissioner also revealed that the state government would soon flag off the reconstruction of the 25km Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road and the 13.1km Uriam-Usaka Ring Road in Ikwuano Local Government Area.
In addition, Kanu announced plans to restore electricity supply to Ohafia, which has been without power for the past seven years.
He further disclosed that the first phase of the functionalisation of renovated primary healthcare centres across the state has been completed, as part of ongoing efforts to improve healthcare delivery.
