The chieftain of Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Sunday Jonny, yesterday donated gift items to 150 widows in the area.
Jonny said that the kind gesture was to show appreciation and love to widows in the communities who could not afford one square meal in Onna.
The items donated included rice, wrappers and five cows to the people of the communities at Qua Iboe Primary School, Awa.
“Since we are in festive period, I only came to appreciate my people and to let them know that they have someone like me in government. Let us imbibe the spirit of love, peace and togetherness in this yuletide season and beyond,” he said.
He said that the donation was aimed at putting smiles on the faces of the people as well as giving them a sense of belonging during the yuletide season.
Jonny, who is also the Personal Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom advised the people to embrace peace and unity during the New Year, adding that “the year is promising”.
He noted that 2016 would be a greater year that would bring prosperity to the people of the state.
He admonished the people to be grateful and thankful to God for making them to see the New Year.
“2016 will bring a positive change to the country if only we can be focused on God,” he said.
Jonny called on the people to support the state governor to achieve its industrialisation agenda, youth empowerment, and wealth creation, among others.
He solicited the support of the people to ensure that the governor won in the re-run election in the state.
Responding on behalf of the widows, Mrs Anietie Udohqwua expressed appreciation to God, adding that the gesture “is a right step in the right direction’’.
She called on the spirited individuals and politicians to extend the hands of fellowship to other widowers in the area. [PDP/NAN]
