Workers in the Plateau State Civil Service have used the opportunity of Workers’ day celebratIon, popularly known as May Day to complain about the way the state government had been treating the workforce.
The workers, who were at the 2014 Workers’ Day celebration at the Rwang Pam Stadium, Jos Thursday, complained bitterly that not only have they not been promoted in the past eight years, their salaries which the administration of Governor Jonah Jang promised to pay before the end of every month have now not been paid in the past two months.
“For over eight years, workers in the public service of Plateau State have been denied promotion for no reason,” the workers revealed.
Chairman of the state chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Jibrin Bancir, while speaking at the occasion said “This is a government that pledged the payment of salaries before the 25th of every month. Today, two months down the line, no salary has been paid.”
Workers in other states have complained of similar situation in terms of non-payment of salaries, with a worker who spoke to reporters in Osun on condition of anonymity saying the government sometimes owe workers two months salary.
“Sometimes, they pay some cadres in the civil service and when you complain that the government has not aid your salary for two months, you look like a liar because some have actually been paid,” the worker said.
