North-East Youths under the aegis of North-East Youth Peace and Development Initiative (NEYPDI) have commended the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, over the recent donation he made to states worse-hit by the Boko Haram insurgency.
Gov. Ambode had last week donated a check of N50 million each to the governors of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States, to assist them in rehabilitating Internally Displaced Persons in their respective states.
Reacting to the gesture at the weekend in Lagos, the National President, NEYPDI, Alhaji Kyari Abubakar, described Ambode as a detribalized leader whose contributions must be emulated by other Nigerians.
“We the youths from north-east appreciate the good gesture of Ambode and the good people of Lagos State for identifying with the plight of the displaced people of north-east”, he said.
According to Abubakar, the recent donation is not the first assistance rendered by the state government since the challenge of coping with the IDPs assumed a worrisome dimension in the country.
Lagos State, he added, has assisted in hosting some displaced persons from the geo-political zone of the country.
The NEYPDI president, who expressed worry over the living condition of youths and women in the north-east, however, urged the federal government to establish a North-East Development Commission to handle the reconstruction of the area.
He said, “Judging by the raving effect of Boko Haram insurgency to the region, we feel, the establishment of a commission would address the reconstruction of the area as soon as possible”.
On the deadline given to end insurgency in the area, Abubakar expressed optimism on the ability of the military to completely liberate the area from the menace of insurgency.
He commended the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for his unwavering interest in bringing Boko Haram insurgency to an end and pledged the support of the people of north-east to the policies of the present administration.
“The people of north-east especially the youths would continue to support President Buhari in his effort to defeat Boko Haram and liberate the zone from the menace of insurgency, which has destroyed lives and economy of the people”, Abubakar stated.
