Police Command in Nasarawa State on Friday said it arrested 22 people in Lafia following violent protest by some groups over the impeachment notice served on Gov. Umaru Al-Makura.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Ibrahim Idris, confirmed the arrest at the news briefing on behalf of the state joint security committee.

Idris said that no life was lost but two persons sustained injuries and were in hospitalised in Lafia.

He explained that a locally-made pistol, some ammunitions, knives and dangerous weapons were recovered from the suspects.

According to him, five shops and a residential apartment were vandalised while a vehicle was burnt by the hoodlums.

The commissioner said that a fake policeman was among those arrested, and that the security operatives were on the trail of four people who alleged masterminded the crisis.

Idris, who said the situation had been brought under control, urged the people to always be vigilant and pursue peace.

He warned those peddling misleading rumours that were capable of aggravating the current security situation in the state to desist.

“We have been getting information that people in and around Lafia have started to flee their home based on media reports,’’ Idris said.

He therefore advised journalists to always verify their information before going public, adding that any misinformation to members of the public could cause panic or escalate the crisis. [NAN]
