The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), has congratulated the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), calling on him to prioritize the clean-up of Ogoniland as recommended by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
MOSOP, which also commended President Goodluck Jonathan for accepting the outcome of last Saturday’s presidential election, reminded the president-elect that he promised during his visit to Ogoniland as part of his campaign that he would ensure the implementation of the UNEP report.
MOSOP, in a statement issued on Friday, pointed out that the non-implementation of the UNEP recommendations on the oil pollution in the area was compromising the survival of Ogoni people as they continued to suffer food insecurity and health challenges.
The statement, signed by the Media/Public Affairs Advisor to MOSOP President, Mr. Bari-ara Kpalap, indicated that the quick and proper implementation of the report would address the challenges faced by the people of Ogoni.
“MOSOP will appeal that as the President-elect and the All Progressives Congress settles down to articulate policies and strategies for actualising their programmes for a better Nigeria, implementation of the UNEP environmental report on Ogoniland, which Gen. Buhari has promised our people should be a priority”, the statement said.
The Ogoni apex body, however, urged Mr. Buhari to see his victory as that of all Nigerians.
