Abuja (Nigerian National Merit Award Report)
President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the conferment of the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) Award for the year 2014 on Niyi Osundare (Professor), who is a renowned poet, dramatist and essayist after rigorous assessment by the Board of the Nigerian National Merit Award (NNMA).
Describing the award which was established by Act No. 53 of 1979 and amended by Act No. 96 of 1992 as a concern on the promotion of intellectualism and professionalism in Nigeria, the Publicity Department of the Award Office in its report published lately stated that it honours ingenious Nigerians at home and the Diaspora by awarding them with the NNOM Award and initiating them into a league of laureates.
“The award will be conferred by the President on Thursday December 4, 2014 at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa. This was confirmed by the Chairman of the Governing Board of the NNMA, Etim M. Essien (Professor) in a press conference held recently at the NNMA Secretariat in Maitama, Abuja,” the release said.
“Etim M. Essien disclosed that prior to the NNOM investiture, the Governing Board of the NNMA will be organizing the 7th Forum of NNOM Laureates from December 2 – 3, 2014. The theme for this year’s forum is tagged: The National Value System.”
He also indicated that in the past, Nigerian scholars tended to concentrate their researches on issues that are not directly relevant to the needs and aspirations of the country, assuring Nigerians that the theme and sub-theme of this year’s forum was carefully selected to reflect the needs of the nation and the Transformation Agenda of the present administration.
The NNMA Governing Board Chairman informed the public that the programme of the forum will include: the Award Winner’s Lecture to be delivered by S. C Ohaegbulam (Professor), a special group dinner and a first-of-its-kind Presidential Dinner in honour of the 2014 NNOM Award recipient and the laureates.
