Nyesom Wike, who serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has stated that he has been given a direction from the president to construct a new Court of Appeal in Abuja.
This was announced by the Minister of Justice during the opening ceremony of the 2023 All Nigeria Judges’ Conference of the Superior Courts of Record, which took place on Monday at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja.
Wike added that this action is in accordance with the goals of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which is aimed at ensuring that the judicial system operates in an atmosphere that is conducive to the impartial and fair delivery of justice.
In this regard, Wike stated that Tinubu had given orders for the establishment of a new Court of Appeal division for the FCT, which would be finished within the next 15 months, as well as the construction of houses for judges of the High Court and their counterparts in Magistrates courts in the capital city. Both of these projects are expected to be finished within the next 15 months.
“Here at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), we are dedicated to creating an atmosphere that provides the judicial system with the resources it needs to carry out its duties without showing favoritism or showing fear.”
“We recognize the importance of a well-equipped and adequate staff force as well as the need for continuous education to ensure that our judges are abreast of the latest developments in jurisprudence. Both of these things are necessary to ensure that our judges are able to make sound decisions.”
It gives me great pleasure to say that steps are currently being taken to improve the infrastructure of our court facilities, including the wellbeing of judicial personnel.
“According to the directive given to us by the President, we are to start immediately building a new Court of Appeal division in Abuja, and we have been given a deadline of 15 months to finish the project.
“And the President also directed that we should construct houses for the FCT judges and magistrates in Abuja and also directed that judges of the Federal High Court in Abuja and the Court of Appeal in Abuja division must be given new quarters,” he continued. “And the President also directed that we should construct houses for the FCT judges and magistrates in Abuja.”
He lauded the National Judicial Institute’s (NJI) dedication to creating a forum where judges from all across the country may congregate, share their perspectives, and have in-depth conversations about urgent legal matters, and he praised NJI for this commitment.
Wike continued by saying that, “While it (the conference) remains one of the most anticipated events for judges in Nigeria, it also provides a platform for them to stay abreast of evolving legal issues, share best practices, and collectively strategize on ways to enhance the administration of justice in Nigeria.”
The Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the NJI, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, delivered the keynote presentation at the conference. In it, he emphasized the importance of the conference as a strategic event that serves the twin goal of stock-taking and visioning.
