The State Government has began to enforce the Rivers State Transport Manifest Scheme in all parks and jetties in the State.
The Commissioner for Transport Hon. George Tolofari stated this in a stakeholders meeting with transport companies and members of transport unions.
Hon. Tolofari disclosed that all travelers from a vehicle terminals or jetties must write their names, contact phone numbers and destination on the manifest before embarking on their journey.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Mr. Nuka Nwikpasi, the Commissioner said that with the security situation in the country such date would be used to track all those that come in and out of the State, and it would also be useful for proper planning.
“The Ministry of Transport should be able to have an idea of the number of people that come into the State and that is exactly what the manifest scheme is all about”, the Commissioner said.
Hon. Tolofari assured travelers that this scheme is for the benefit of the general public and therefore appealed to all those doing transport business in the State to comply with this directive.
Earlier a representative of the Chairman of the Association of luxurious buses owners of Nigeria (ALBON) Alhaji Shehu Ahmed assured the government that the scheme is a welcome development and promised to comply with the directive.
Those at the meeting included executive members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Rivers Transport Company (RTC), Akwa Ibom Transport Company (AKTC), Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and others.
