Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has criticized the proposal for the creation of 31 additional states in Nigeria, describing it as both “ironic and comical.”
The proposal, put forward by the House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, was read during Thursday’s plenary by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
Reacting in a post on his X handle on Friday, Sani questioned the rationale behind creating new states when most existing ones rely heavily on federal allocations for survival.

“While many states are dependent on federal allocation for their survival, the House of Representatives’ proposal for 31 new states is ironic and comical.
Politicians just want to carve out mini colonies for themselves,” he stated.
If approved, the number of states in Nigeria would increase from 36 to 67.
