The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has accused the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) of harassing him at the airport and attempting to prevent him from leaving the country.
Sowore, in a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) page, alleged that Immigration officials claimed his name was on their watchlist, leading to the repeated harassment.
“The Nigerian Immigration Service continues to subject me to unwarranted harassment and abuse, violating my rights repeatedly,” Sowore stated.
“Today, again, they stopped me on my way out of Nigeria, claiming I am placed on their WATCHLIST!”
Sowore also shared a video accompanying the post, capturing part of the encounter.
In a similar incident in September, Sowore was arrested at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
During that encounter, the NIS reportedly detained him and confiscated his international passport upon his arrival in the country.
