The Special Task Force (STF) in Jos, Plateau State, on Monday said it has no report of an alleged stampede at the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential rally, which was said to have led to the death of two persons.
The STF was reacting to online media reports, which claimed that two persons had been killed in a stampede at the Rwang Pam stadium in Jos on Saturday, venue of the campaign rally, when the APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) was being moved out of the stadium after a tear-gas attack.
Media and Information Officer of the STF, Captain Ikedichi Iweha, said: “we have no such report. In fact we want to commend the people for their orderly and good conduct during the campaign and we urge all political parties to conduct themselves in line with the peace accord recently signed”.
According to reports, Buhari was addressing the mammoth crowd in Hausa when a tear-gas was thrown at him despite a prior warning against that by one of the masters of ceremony.
The situation reportedly forced the presidential candidate to stop abruptly and hand over the microphone to the National Women Leader of the party, Hajiya Ramatu Tijjani, who was standing close by and she and other party officials on the podium rushed him off into his car and out of the stadium.
