The All Progressives Congress in Rivers State has reassured its members and the people of the state that the job of the Governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, is not threatened.
The reassurance is coming on the heels of the apprehension in some quarters after the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, identified Amaechi as one of the remaining four governors of the party marked for impeachment before the 2015 elections after former Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako was impeached.
In a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant, Media and Public Affairs to the state Chairman of APC, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, the ruling party in the state described Amaechi as an experienced politician, who was in a better position to understand legislative power games.
“The Rivers State chapter of the APC wishes to reassure party faithful, the good people of Rivers State and all progressives across the country that the job of the state Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, remains very much safe.
“This reassurance becomes necessary in view of the apprehension in some quarters following the confirmation by the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, that Amaechi is one of the five APC governors pencilled down by the Presidency to be impeached before the 2015 elections – others being the governors of Adamawa (already impeached), Nasarawa, Edo and Borno.
“We are confident that God will not allow the evil machinations of the Presidency and the PDP to materialise. In the specific case of Rivers State, we are sure that God who has protected Amaechi all these years will surely see him through to the end of his tenure.”
“We should also appreciate the fact that apart from politics, most of the members of the House are Amaechi’s colleagues and political associates, who are too principled to sell out at this crucial time”.
Explaining that Amaechi and the state lawmakers shared similar political fate, the state APC recalled that they (Amaechi and the 25 lawmakers) were all suspended from the PDP and forced to join the APC.
It described the pro-Amaechi members of the House of Assembly, who formally defected to APC last week, as victims of PDP’s brutality and high-handedness.
“Amaechi and the G25 lawmakers detest evil, greed and politics without principle, which are the hallmarks of Nyesom Wike’s G6 lawmakers.
“Not to be overlooked is Amaechi’s feats in education, health, agriculture provision, quality roads and making Port Harcourt the world book capital. All these have conferred on him an international stature and any mad step to impeach him for any unholy reason will attract the ire of the international community”.
The Rivers APC, however, congratulated the pro-Amaechi lawmakers for defecting to the party, adding that their action has proven that they are true progressives.
“By so doing, they have proved and demonstrated that they are true progressives who are resolutely committed towards an egalitarian, virile and vibrant Rivers State.
“With this development, the Speaker, Hon. Otelemaba Amachree; Deputy Speaker, Leyii Kwanee, a barrister; Majority Leader, Chidi Llyod, a barrister; Deputy Leader, Ewor Nname Robinson; Acting Chief Whip, Irene M. Inimgba, a barrister; and others, APC now enjoys an overwhelming majority in the Rivers State House of Assembly.
“With the rejection of the PDP by the Rivers State people, the Evans Bipi-led G6 renegade lawmakers should read the handwriting on the wall and follow the good example of the majority lawmakers before it is too late”, the statement read.
