The Panshekara community in Kano State was thrown into mourning on Wednesday following a shocking incident in which a young man, identified as Suleiman Muntari, set himself ablaze in broad daylight.
Eyewitnesses said Muntari displayed signs of emotional and mental distress moments before the tragic act. He was reportedly seen wandering aimlessly along the roadside, muttering to himself—behaviour described by onlookers as unusual and alarming.
According to reports, Muntari suddenly doused himself with petrol and struck a match, igniting the flames before passersby could intervene.

“He said he wanted to go to Paradise. People around thought he was just expressing frustration or stress. No one imagined he would actually go through with it,” recounted Saminu Isah, an eyewitness at the scene.
Despite frantic efforts by bystanders to save him, the flames engulfed Muntari rapidly, making rescue attempts futile.
Some residents suspect that the deceased may have been under the influence of a mind-altering substance, given his incoherent speech and erratic behaviour.
“It was clear he wasn’t in the right state of mind. The way he was talking and moving was strange. There was also a strong smell on him, and he kept shouting things that made no sense,” said Aisha Salisu, a local resident.
As of the time of this report, local authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident. However, the tragic event has reignited public concern over the rising cases of mental health challenges among youths in the state.
