United States President-elect Donald Trump returned to the White House on Wednesday, meeting with President Joe Biden in a historic and symbolically charged visit.
This marks Trump’s first time back at the White House in four years and comes ahead of the scheduled transfer of power on January 20.
President Biden extended the invitation to Trump for the customary visit, a tradition that underscores the peaceful transfer of power in American democracy.
However, the meeting carries significant political tension, as Biden and Trump faced off in the 2024 election.
Initially, Biden, a Democrat, had launched a reelection campaign but ended his bid in July after a challenging debate performance. Following his withdrawal, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his preferred successor.
Despite this backing, Harris was ultimately defeated at the polls, with Trump securing a decisive victory.
The gesture stands in contrast to the 2020 election transition, when Trump, after losing to Biden, chose not to extend an invitation to Biden ahead of the inauguration and departed Washington two hours before Biden was sworn in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol.
