Special Duties & Inter-Governmental Affairs Report
The Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has called on Nigerians to work with President Jonathan to save Nigerian democracy. He said this when he received on behalf of President Jonathan, the ‘Save Democracy Group’ in his office in Abuja on Monday April 7, 2014.
The Minister noted that Nigeria is bigger than any interest that anyone would think of, adding that the country should be put above any individual interest.
‘The Save Democracy Group, he said were on a courtesy visit to commend the President for demilitarizing democracy and giving the Nigerian media, the Civil Society Groups and the opposition groups the freedom to express their views in a manner unusual in Nigerian democracy. “The Group was also in the Ministry to brief the President on its planned Democracy Walk scheduled to hold in the six geo-political zones in Nigeria from May 2 and to end in Abuja with a rally and lecture on May 26 and 27, 2014,” he noted.
According to the National Coordinator of the ‘Save Democracy Group’, Ifedi Okwenna, the group would want politicians to separate politics from governance so that the people of Nigeria will be able to reap the dividends of democracy. He disclosed an emerging trend in Nigeria’s political landscape with concern to the increasing level of intolerance and the re-emergence of ‘do or die’ politics with the approach of the 2015 election year.
“The Save Democracy Group is a coalition of registered Civil Society and Community-based Organizations, who are engaged in socio-political advocacy, education and peace- building for sustainable democracy in Nigeria,” he iterated.
