Urgent Federal Intervention Needed as Floods Devastate Yobe State

The ongoing floods in Yobe State have caused severe disruptions and damage, prompting calls for the Federal Government to intervene urgently to alleviate the suffering of affected communities and avert an impending humanitarian crisis.

Senator Musa Mustapha of the Yobe East Senatorial District made a passionate appeal for immediate action following the recent floods that have isolated nine local government areas from the state capital, Damaturu.

Senator Mustapha expressed deep concern over the dire situation, highlighting the significant impact of the flooding on the livelihoods of the residents.

“This natural disaster could worsen the existing hardships faced by our people, who depend heavily on the state capital for essential supplies, including food, medicine, and other basic necessities,” he stated.

With several key routes now impassable, the flooding has not only disrupted transportation but also severed vital links for the delivery of goods and services to these communities.

The Senator detailed the extensive damage caused by the floods, noting that numerous villages and towns in the Yobe East Senatorial District have been completely cut off, forcing residents to rely on longer, more arduous alternative routes to reach Damaturu.

The situation has created a logistical nightmare, with many facing additional travel costs and delays in accessing crucial services.

The isolation of these areas raises significant concerns about the well-being of residents, especially those requiring medical attention and urgent supplies.

Senator Mustapha commended Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni for his swift response to the crisis.

Within 24 hours of the flooding incident, Governor Buni had dispatched his deputy to assess the situation on the ground, demonstrating a proactive approach to managing the disaster.

“Governor Buni’s immediate action in sending his deputy to evaluate the damage is commendable,” Mustapha noted, adding that such prompt measures are critical in disaster response and management.

However, he emphasised that the scale of the disaster requires substantial support from the Federal Government to ensure a coordinated and effective response.

The flooding, which has caused widespread destruction of infrastructure, particularly roads, poses a serious challenge to the state’s recovery efforts.

Critical road networks have been severely damaged, further complicating the movement of goods and people.

Senator Mustapha called on the Federal Government to prioritise the repair and reconstruction of these essential roadways to restore connectivity and support economic activities in the affected regions.

He also underscored the need for long-term measures to address the recurrent issue of flooding in Yobe State, including investment in resilient infrastructure and comprehensive flood management strategies.

Moreover, Mustapha appealed for immediate humanitarian assistance to support the displaced and those who have lost their homes and livelihoods.

He highlighted the urgent need for relief supplies such as food, clean water, shelter, and medical aid to help the affected communities cope with the aftermath of the disaster.
