The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis experienced two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, attributed to a significant buildup of endobronchial mucus causing bronchospasms.
In a statement on Monday evening, the Holy See Press Office disclosed that two bronchoscopies had been conducted to remove large secretions.
The Pope also resumed non-invasive mechanical ventilation earlier in the day.

“The Holy Father remained alert, oriented, and cooperative at all times,” the statement read, while noting that his prognosis remains guarded.
Acute respiratory insufficiency occurs when oxygen levels in the body fall below the required threshold.
Despite his health challenges, Pope Francis earlier on Monday announced the theme for the 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees: “Migrants: Missionaries of Hope.”
“Many migrants and refugees bear witness to hope through their trust in God,” the Pontiff shared in a post on his official X account.
This year’s World Day of Migrants and Refugees is scheduled for October, coinciding with the Jubilee celebrations.
