As the attention of the world is focused on the unconditional release of the over 200 girls of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State abducted by insurgents, the Government of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has said that it is opposed to all kinds of terrorism against children and women.
Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Jong Yong made this known at the presentation of letter of invitation to Nigerian children for the Songdowon International Children Camp scheduled for July in the North Korean Capital of Pyongyang, to the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
He commended the efforts of the Nigerian Government in its efforts to bring back the abducted girls and its fight against insurgency, assuring that his country was solidly behind the fight against global terrorism and any crime against humanity.
While conveying his country’s sympathy over the unfortunate incidence, the Korean envoy assured that they were willing to support any work that would promote the welfare of children and women in Nigeria.
“The Government of the Republic of Korea will establish a strong bilateral relationship and technical cooperation with Nigeria to boost child welfare in the areas of education and recreation as well as women development and empowerment”, he stated.
While responding, the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Habiba Lawal restated the commitment of the Nigeria Government to rescue the abducted girls and return them safely back to their families.
Dr. Lawal said, Government was already preparing for the safe return of the girls as plans were being made to ensure their proper reintegration, and would welcome the support of its partners towards their rehabilitation and the general welfare and development of women and children in the country.
She said, the Ministry will continue to lead in advocacy and the promotion of girl-child education as vehicle of women empowerment and gender mainstreaming in the country.
