The Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung has commended the Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese in the Northern part of Nigeria, Hassan Kukah for his selfless service to the fatherland, describing him as the conscience of the nation, apostle of peace and religious harmony as well as a rare gift of God to Nigeria.
Solomon Dalung gave this commendation in Abuja when the cleric led a delegation to pay him a courtesy visit in his office on the 2nd of December, 2015. He said that Hassan Kukah (Bishop) is not only a priest, but a social worker, mobiliser of youth, a bridge builder and a symbol of peaceful co-existence and understanding among different faiths.
The Minister praised the Catholic Church under the guidance of Hassan Kukah for establishing the Kukah Unity Cup which is contested for by youth clubs made up of Christians and Muslims as part of the initiatives for promoting love, understanding and goodwill amongst the two dominant religions in the country.
Hassan Kukah in his response said that he came to congratulate the Minister on his new appointment by Mr. President. He informed the Minister about the Kukah Unity Cup established in June this year to be contested for by multi-religious clubs from four States – Sokoto, Kano, Kaduna and Katsina with the objective of fostering unity, healthy competition and love among them.
The cleric extended formal invitation to the Minister for this 2015 tournament’s final competition coming up on the 13th of December 2015; an invitation which was readily accepted by the Minister.
Also speaking at the occasion, Father Cyriacus (Reverend), who accompanied the Bishop presented a plaque of unity to the Minister on behalf of the organizer of the football tournament.
