The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has revealed that 3,767 individuals lost their lives in 7,011 road traffic crashes (RTC) across Nigeria between January and September 2024.
The disclosure was made by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, during the launch of the 2024 Road Traffic Crash Victims Remembrance Week at St. John’s Evangelist Cathedral Church, Bauchi, on Sunday.
Mohammed, represented by the Bauchi State Sector Commander, Istifanus Ibrahim, also noted that 22,373 people sustained various degrees of injuries during the same period.

Mohammed attributed the significant impact of road traffic crashes to Nigeria’s large population, stating, “As the most populous country in Africa, we bear a heavy burden of road traffic incidents.”
Highlighting the objectives of the 2024 World Day of Remembrance for RTC Victims, Mohammed emphasized the importance of honoring the deceased and supporting those recovering in hospitals.
“This day is meant to acknowledge the crucial work of emergency services, highlight the often inadequate legal response to culpable road deaths and injuries, and advocate for appropriate actions. It also aims to promote better support for victims and their families and encourage evidence-based measures to prevent further road traffic fatalities and injuries,” he said.
The Corps Marshal explained that the church visit was part of a series of activities marking the remembrance week, with a similar visit scheduled to a Jumaat Mosque on Friday. He underscored the FRSC’s commitment to using religious platforms to raise road safety awareness among Nigerians.
Mohammed called on governments to adopt the Safe System Approach to enhance vehicular safety and urged road users to recognize the disproportionate risks faced by passengers in road crashes.
He stressed the need for collective responsibility to improve road safety.
In response, Rev. Raphael Agbada commended the FRSC for its outreach and pledged to support the campaign beyond the church.
“We will do everything possible to support your efforts in ensuring road safety,” Agbada assured.
