The Federal Government has announced an extension of the free rail services for commuters, extending the period from December 21, 2023, to January 7, 2024.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) made this disclosure on its official website, revising the earlier announced end date of January 4, 2024.
According to the NRC, the extension means that commuters who book their train tickets using the NRC’s e-ticketing platform can continue to enjoy free train rides nationwide for the next three days.

The announcement on the NRC website stated, “Dear Passengers, we are pleased to inform you that train services will be free of charge from December 21, 2023, to January 7, 2024, as per the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!”
This extension follows President Tinubu’s earlier announcement on December 20, 2023, of a 50% transport fare discount for interstate travel and free commuter rides on all rail lines from December 2023 to January 4, 2024.
The extension of the free rail services is expected to provide additional relief to commuters during the festive season and promote the use of rail transportation as a cost-effective and efficient means of travel across the country.
