The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared that while no Nigerian is above the law, justice must be fair and not selective.
The party made the assertion in defence of former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who are currently facing legal proceedings.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said it would not abandon the two leaders or any of its members undergoing prosecution.

Last week, a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered that Malami, who is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
El-Rufai, on his part, honoured an invitation by the EFCC on February 16. He remained in custody until the night of February 18 before he was reportedly transferred to the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) for further investigation over alleged financial misconduct.
“The African Democratic Congress has been monitoring the ongoing legal cases involving two of our leaders,” the statement read.
The party stressed that it respects the rule of law but cautioned against what it described as selective justice.
“As a law-abiding party, it is important to state that no citizen, no matter their position, is above the law. However, in a constitutional democracy, justice must be applied evenly, transparently and without political motives,” the party stated.
The ADC also urged Nigerians to compare the handling of the cases with other high-profile matters, citing a recent case involving allegations such as passport forgery and international conspiracy, where the accused persons were granted bail and their trial is progressing swiftly.
“In contrast, in the cases involving Abubakar Malami and Nasir El-Rufai, we have seen prolonged detention, transfers between agencies and processes that appear to precede formal prosecution,” the statement added.
The party emphasised that its position was rooted in constitutional principles rather than politics.
“Abubakar Malami and Nasir El-Rufai are first citizens of Nigeria before they are opposition leaders or members of our party,” it said.
The ADC maintained that both men are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law.
“That presumption is not a favour. It is a constitutional right. We will stand by our members as they defend themselves and ensure they are not intimidated or denied their rights as Nigerian citizens,” the party stated.
