Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has called on the Inspector-General of Police to direct the state police command to withdraw security protection from local government chairmen aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC), following a ruling of the Federal High Court in Osogbo.
Addressing journalists in Osogbo on Monday, Adeleke said the court had dismissed an application seeking tenure elongation for the chairmen and ruled that they lacked the legal standing to institute the suit.

According to the governor, the judgment reaffirmed constitutional provisions and previous judicial pronouncements against tenure extension.
He maintained that the ruling had further clarified the legal position regarding the tenure of local government officials in the state.
“The dismissal of the elongation request conforms with the stipulations of the Constitution. The judgment further validates the precedent set by the Supreme Court ruling that tenure elongation is unconstitutional,” Adeleke said.
The governor also congratulated the duly elected local government chairmen, saying the judgment validated their position.
He urged all stakeholders to respect the court’s decision and uphold the rule of law in the interest of peace and democratic governance in the state.
Adeleke further called on security agencies to act in accordance with the court’s ruling and ensure compliance with extant laws.
The development comes amid ongoing political and legal disputes over the leadership of local government councils in Osun State.
Meanwhile, there has been no immediate reaction from the APC-aligned local government chairmen regarding the governor’s request at the time of filing this report.
